Wherever humans are, so are dogs. They’re the most successfully thriving animals companionship-wise.
When it comes to connecting with people new to them, what are dogs doing? Well, How are connections formed between social beings? On persons that struggle building connections, one could often point to disorders related to development—scientifically-speaking, then, canines are seen as an ideal of connecting socially.
A mixed pedigree of golden & Labrador retriever seem favored as service canine candidates at Canine Companions for Independence.
Biochemically-speaking, dog-human interactions may have something to do with oxytocin dynamics. This neurochemical play a part that’s crucial in social connectivity & attachments between humans. It’s the feel-good hormone that’s liked to pretty much all such feelings, anywhere from orgasm to empathy. Some even call it the ‘love hormone’.
It just so happens that our Oxytocin-mediated bonding is sequestered by canines. Remember the time(s) when a familiar dog just looks at you, but one can’t really make out what it’s for? Dog’s already eaten & taken on an outside stroll.
It’s almost as if they want to wrap around you with their gaze.
Sure enough, the muscles found on dog’s eyebrows are made to reveal more of the eye’s white regions (the sclera); a characteristic that’s shared with us people.
Thus, it’s not about feelings, period; but also neurochemical messengers & eye muscles.
It’s now come to the point where studying baby dogs has advanced knowledge on how to deal with children physically & emotionally.
it comes down to socializing from the time they’re young so they won’t be threatened when it happens, instead of becoming aggressive as a way to emotionally shelter from socially perceived threats. & that goes for both kids & dogs.
The canine ‘guilty look’ is often used as a classic example to state that guilt is felt by dogs when going through an activity they’re not supposed to take part on. Yet, that part of cognition in question, is predicated on the dog handler’s reaction—e.g., if the animal was admonished.
So, a guilty canine look could better be described as an owner-cue response, instead of the other way around.
& what about a doggie’s smell cognition? Well, canines are keen to know differences regarding a shirt from a stranger vs. one worn by its human companion; & that’s with the human in question, not being present.
Just for reference, I think it’s worth adding that there’s only around six million olfactory receptors in people. Dogs have a whooping up to 300 million. Moreover, we tend to actively smell in an infrequent & indifferent fashion.
Dogs? They’re doing it non-stop, anywhere from five-10 times/second; it’s how they make a sensible map of their world. & yet, smell dynamics is not acknowledged as much as we thought, in studies dealing with dog knowledge; something that needs to be prioritized based on its significance.
For better or worse, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that have now been created in our likeness & image on many forms: less wild-like & more cooperative while loving unconditionally, & likely smarter (in our eyes, that is).
It’s us gunning for traits that reflect us in them—that being our desirable behavior, thus creating a willingness to spend an inordinate amount of time with them (sort of like a self-fulfilling prophecy?). whatever the case may be, we’ve come up with a creature that want to, & very successfully connects with us.
Simply stated, a sharing motivation (a naturally emerging one) is a Constant seen through our whole developmental process. Sharing experiences with another makes for a better experience the more these are done.
So, when looking at the modern dog, it’s looking at another animal speciated through thousands of years for sharing experiences with us.
Looking back, what’s more comforting than a whole bunch of puppies?
“Nothing else”, some may say.
& that our increasing knowledge on dogs might have us get to know more of ourselves, the dog being a sort of mirror.
In particular, your dog—a constant, like the speed of light or gravity; a surety in unsure times.
Admittedly, science is limited in stating a more profound sense that’s more universally powerful. When everything’s said & done, at the end of it all, it is us being chosen by the dog.
