When six-year-old Leo Downs walked into the shelter to help out his parents with donations, he didn’t expect he’d be walking out with a new family member by his side.
Little Leo was reeling from the loss of his furry companion named Mellow, who passed away recently due to natural causes. They had a strong bond because the dog took part in taking care of Leo when he was just a wee newborn. The two even shared a bunk bed, with the pup taking the bottom one. It was clear that the special connection between the two couldn’t separate them.
However, Mellow’s time soon came and Leo was left broken-hearted. Understandably, the loss of a pet at a young age devastated a child. He was probably hoping to make more memories with the pup long into his teenage years.
Aside from the six-year-old, Mellow also had an irreplaceable place in the hearts of Leo’s parents. After spending 13 years with the pup, they knew that getting a replacement wasn’t going to be easy. So they took it easy and didn’t get a new dog right after Mellow’s passing.
Leo, on the other hand, wanted to get a new dog right there and then. He wanted to fill the void immediately because he longed for a dog’s presence that Mellow once filled. At that moment, Leo’s parents thought that if adopting a new dog would bring back Leo’s sweet smile, they would surely be willing to do it.
One day, Leo’s mom searched through a shelter’s social media page when she found a nine-week-old pup named Nutty Buddy, who looked exactly like Mellow! She quickly got her husband to fill out an application form for the dog, and soon enough, it was accepted!
The parents wanted to make this adoption a surprise for Little Leo to brighten up his day. So they teamed up with the shelter to make it look like they were just donating to the shelter, but in reality, they were also getting a new family member when they’d walk out.
What happened next brought tears to Leo’s eyes and moved the hearts of many people who watched this video.
