Nowadays, looking for gourmet dog food is flooded with options. It could be anywhere from $12 to $72. But there’s also an $86 version. Even a $70 offer that’s labeled ‘100% human grade’, so, totally up to you if you wanna join Fido without compromising your health.
Heck, there’s even a completely vegetarian version, also similarly priced. What was once an animal used for farm work & fed leftover meals, now they sleep on owner’s beds instead of Peanut’s doghouse. Some go so far as to get orthopedic beds for their pets.
Then there are psychiatric-prescribed antidepressants…for dogs. That’s not even including dangerous mystic healing arts including acupuncture & psychics. Also, doggie spas & massage therapy. Oh yeah, they also wear sweaters.
Just about 30 years ago, around 10 million dogs were known to get euthanized. Now, less than 700,000. There are now more canines getting adopted from shelters than being killed. To a primitive person allowed to observe a post-modern dog-human interaction, it may end up thinking dogs are in charge.
I mean, they poop & we pick it up (& carry it) for them. So, how the so-called labeled under-dogs ended up as our spoiled dictators? One writer sees it as if those oppressing took it upon themselves to side-step from those being oppressed.
Everything’s changed. From how pets are getting lost & found to the number of pets now much larger than anyone’s imagined. That is now supporting over a million jobs. Anywhere from a tester of pet food, to counseling on pet adoption, to cancer subspecialty in veterinary medicine.
This paradigm shift could arguably be traced back to just before the turn of the century. Pet spending went for those next 20 years from over $23 billion to just over $90 billion (accounting for inflation). For those counting, that’s an almost 300% increase.
